News – Cisco Announces EOL Schedule for 6500s

with 7 comments

This is a surprise, but Cisco has announced the end of life of the 6500 switches that we all know and love.  Usually Cisco gives a platform a few more years after they decide to retire it, but the schedule only gives the 6500s one more year of service.  I’m sure this goes back the success and recent expansion of the Nexus line of switches.

Here’s the lowdown from Cisco.

End of Sale – September 30, 2011
Last Ship Date –  October 30, 2011
End of Routine Failure Analysis – November 31, 2011
End of Service Contract Date – January 31, 2012
End of Support – April 1, 2012

That’s a very aggressive schedule and doesn’t really make very much sense.  They just announced an ASA Service Module for it, so I’m really not sure what this is all about.  I hope details will become more apparent in the press release to be published tomorrow.

Send any mischief questions to me.

Stubby Post – I’m Unemployed…Until Monday

with 3 comments

Today was my last day at the office, and I start a new job and adventure on Monday.  What does that mean for the blog?

The biggest impact is the fact that I won’t have access to a CSM or FSWM any more.  These are two pretty unique devices, and I get quite a few questions on these guys.  I’ll try my best to recount what I know, but I’ll have to get information from buddies at the old job if research is needed.  The CSM has been a backbone of this blog for a while, so I’ll need to find another area with a similar demand for examples and configuration help.  The FWSM doesn’t measure to the same scale, but the old company is the only one I know that runs those things, so the world may be that much poorer in FWSM information.

Another big impact has to do with my new company.  I don’t even want to name them right now since I don’t know their attitude towards posting information about their operations on a blog.  Though I always sanitize the configs and move output around to make it generic, I’ll need to run it by management before even attempting to give on-the-job examples.  In the meantime, keep an eye out for my study notes on this new technology I’ll be breaking maintaining.

Since my career is taking a big turn, the blog is going with it.  Stay tuned to see where we wind up.  :)

Lessons Learned from a Bad Day

with 15 comments

I had a really, really bad day this past Tuesday.  I mean, a really bad day.  I guess I should have seen it coming since the last #stabbytuesday was uneventful.  Here's what said cosmos had in for me and the lessons I took away.  Most of these are things we've all lived before, but, for various reasons, I got blindsided.  I expected more from myself.
